Opening a Demat account is exciting, but life gets busy. A very common scenario we see on investing forums goes like this: "I opened an Angel One account, bought a few stocks, and then stopped trading. Will I still be charged an Account Maintenance Charge (AMC)?"

It is one of the most frequently Googled questions about Angel One, so let’s clear the air on how AMC actually works, how much it costs, and what happens to inactive accounts.

How Much is the Angel One AMC?

Angel One has a very competitive AMC structure to attract new investors:

Unlike older traditional brokers that hit you with a massive ₹500 to ₹1000 lump-sum charge at the end of the year, Angel One’s monthly deduction makes it much easier on your wallet.

Do I Pay AMC If I Don't Trade?

Yes. Account Maintenance Charges are fees levied by the Depository (CDSL/NSDL) and the broker to keep your Demat account open and secure in the digital ecosystem.

Even if you do not execute a single trade for six months, the ₹20 monthly fee will still be applied. If there are no funds in your trading ledger to cover this, your ledger balance will go into the negative.

What is a BSDA Account (And How It Saves You Money)

SEBI introduced the Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) for retail investors with smaller portfolios. If you hold only one Demat account across all brokers and your total holding value is less than ₹50,000, your AMC is completely waived by law! If your holdings are between ₹50,001 and ₹2 Lakhs, the AMC is capped at ₹100 per year. Angel One automatically categorizes eligible accounts under BSDA rules, saving you money if you are a small investor.

How to Handle an Inactive Account

If you plan to stop investing entirely and want to avoid negative ledger balances, simply deleting the app from your phone is not enough. You must formally submit an account closure request through the Angel One portal.

However, given that the AMC is just ₹20 a month, keeping the account open is generally worth it if you plan to jump back into the market during the next dip!
